SQUIRREL GIRL: LOVE IN THE TIME OF CORONA
All the world seemed to have gone to sleep. The streets and the cities lost its din. It was uncanny to walk the streets that felt like a ghost town. Everyone avoided each other. A woman walking toward Squirrel Girl moved away, but the Squirrel Girl danced in the wind, and the wind twirled around her. The breeze was warm and nothing mattered under the sun. The whole world was afraid but she welcomed spring and her heart was full of joy.
Wind called out to her, “Squirrel Girl, what are you dancing about? It is the time of the virus—Corona.”
The Girl smiled and said, “Love is in the air.”
“Love? It is a time of death,” said Wind that swirled around her again.
The Squirrel Girl’s eyes became dreamy. It was true that the whole world was under pandemic. Many had died and were dying still. Her favorite cafes were closed. She could no longer type away with her little hands in her adored cafes. Most of all, she missed the dim sum and fish. After all, men could not live on bread alone, and the Squirrel Girl could not live on nuts alone. Yet, the cherry blossoms were in bloom and their pink petals drifted in the wind which fell upon her head as she walked. She felt like a bride’s flower girl. Squirrel Girl’s heart skipped with expectations from what Spring was to bring. The seasons came and went uncaring of how the world had shut down from the virus. The seasons could not be shut down. The Girl awaited spring and it came as she had waited. As the winter gave signs of departing, spring did not disappoint. The seasons were stable. This trait gave Squirrel Girl courage and hope. Just as the spring came after winter, surely Corona was not meant to stay forever. Just as death was unstoppable, love was too. When it would come, it would come like the wind.
