SQUIRREL GIRL: TIGER TIGER, BURNING BRIGHT

Squirrel Girl desired to heed the call of the lands across the sea. She wanted to set sail and allow Wind to take her. Yet, how to get across? She saw herself on a boat, but she needed to learn how to sail, so she signed up for sailing. It was to be a boating party of six people. Since Wind was going to accompany them, it was to be a party of seven. Squirrel Girl was glad indeed that Wind was always with her.

As the boat gently rocked, one sailor boarded the boat. It was Tiger. He sported his magnificent stripes. Intimating he was to behold, but surprisingly, he waved a hello at Squirrel Girl and smiled. To see Tiger as Wind blew his hair, with the blue sky in the background, was a contrast that Squirrel Girl did not expect to see. Yet, she allowed herself to smile back. Tiger was like tour de force. It was impossible to look away.

Following Tiger, a tall captain boarded the boat. Squirrel Girl took an immediate liking to him and called him Captain Aquatic. Then there was the shipmate Parrot who was genial and agile. He moved about on the boat with ease and controlled the sail. The other sailor was Seal who was friendly and brought a lady friend Mermaid. She immediately perched herself at the front of the boat and sunbathed. One wondered if she would start singing, but she was rather quiet. She appeared to merge with the boat unlike Tiger who made you wonder how he happened to be there. Yet, he was in his element.

Gone was the intimidating glare, Tiger was like a sunbeam allowing himself to have Wind lead him. He was very unlike himself on the boat. He didn’t mind when Girl was close to his territory and shared his space. Tiger was a loner and kept to his den, yet the water and Wind tamed him somehow. He was not so intimidating. Squirrel Girl could perceive that he was listening to Wind, but he didn’t comprehend that Wind talked to him. But to see that someone else heard Wind, even if he didn’t know it, caused Squirrel Girl to ponder as she looked into the waves that appeared to chase the boat.

The waves appeared to say, “Squirrel Girl, we follow you … we go where you go … let us have an adventure …”

As the chatty waves chanted, Squirrel Girl watched the four sailors working as a team like busy bees. They were in sync. They spoke the sailor’s language she was told to pick up. The word “head” was important for it meant the restroom. The sailors meant to educate Squirrel Girl who was more comfortable running from branches to branches. Yet, she was also like Wendy of Neverland, and she felt her heart expanding from happiness as the sea wind flapped her long hair as if it were like the sail itself while the briny water sprayed on her face. When she returned home, she knew that her beloved Garden will question her excitedly about the waves as it smelled the salty air that clung about her.

“Where have you been Squirrel Girl? You do not smell like us tonight? Where did Wind take you?”

“I followed Wind and went sailing on the sea … I met four sailors who worked in sync like our bees in our garden. One was Tiger but he smiled and didn’t tell me to walk the plank like Wendy of Neverland in Peter Pan… I had a memorable time.”

Ah—, it must have been a sight to look at Tiger under the moonlight that danced on the waves …”

A faraway look settled on Squirrel Girl’s face. The scene on the boat was mystical indeed. She felt that she was dreaming as she tried controlling the seasickness from lack of food in her stomach, but feeling exhilarated from happiness that she could not contain, she had wished that the dream would continue forever. Wind was constantly flapping her hair while the moon lit her face like a blessing. To see Tiger Tiger, burning bright—not in a forest—but on the sea of the night, was a sight that she will always remember.
