WHAT IS A YOUTH?

What is a youth? It makes you “go.” It makes you dash for the bar laughing away with your friends. Not all of us were so young. But somehow, my life was reset after becoming a widow, and youth returned. With my love gone, the new friends appeared, and it was good to have friends. They helped me to rediscover myself that was lost through love. Why did love made me lose a bit of myself you ask? Well, love demands some sacrifices.

My friends and I argued which bar to dash for. B asked, “Which one should we enter?”

“Yes, which one?” I asked laughing. L wanted to find a cute man. Being lovely, she deserved it. The rest of us just wanted good fun.

There were two bars: one on the left and one on the right. We had to choose. Life was always about choices. It was either/or. To choose the right was the right choice, but the night was young. We dashed for the left. We felt adventurous. When youth called out to you to be daring, you had to succumb. So, I called out, “The left it is!” Then we ran to the left because we were cold. B and R being the youngest ran fast ahead of us. I told B to find the most handsome for our queen bee, and he ran straight to the most handsome man in the bar. B’s radar signal must have been super. The handsome target had the hair dark as night with a killer profile. L was destined to be charmed. I gave B a thumbs up signal, which meant: you did good and deserve a cookie later.

Indeed, L was charmed but she tried to walk away. She was one of the loveliest creatures, so I couldn’t comprehend her. Who would not fall for her? Grabbing her, since she was trying to be slippery, I hung around the handsome man who was too busy eating. Yes, the handsome ones need to eat as well. Surely, he cannot subsist on air? I was hoping that he would turn his head, but he kept on grazing. I almost said: I have one of the prettiest women here and you graze like a cow? No matter, I was patient and determined. Later, L laughed her head off and said that they must have been terrified of me. Yes, I guess I can be terrifying when I set my goal and dash for it. No worries. I was patient. I did what I had to do to get their attention while holding onto L.

Finally, I made some progress. Introductions were made. I introduced L and asked, “What is your name?”

The handsome man, smiling because he must have never been accosted by a crazy Asian, asked, “And what is your name?”

Who cared what my name was, but I told him, “Isn’t my friend pretty?” And who could deny beauty? After that, I literally shoved her into him. Yes, I was a bit scary, but I didn’t care. It was the “youth” that provoked me.

It appeared that they were a group of men who worked together. Nice. As the gorgeous one and L were conversing, I kept the other friend company so that L could chat comfortably. I just needed to be polite and charming. I tend to listen well, and the man appeared to appreciate it. When he commented that some women spent too much money needlessly, in defense, I pointed to my blazer and said, “This was on sale!” I may look like a crazy, rich Asian, but I was just crazy.

Yes, I know. I am a good friend. Unfortunately, the rest of my friends were discarded by us, and I felt a bit concerned. Bored, they went off to feed, which made me a bit jealous because I knew that they were eating something delicious while I was nursing my gin. Yes, I am the gin queen. But it was all or nothing, and I chatted with the friend of the gorgeous one, which was a good thing because I gained a lot of information about the one talking with L. Sadly, the gorgeous one already had a “someone.” Drat-and-double-drat! My hard work was down the drain. No matter, there is always another chance. Next time B’s radar hits a target, I will have another “go” at it.
